Here is a really interesting comment on the authority of God from Conversation with the Bible by Markus Barth (Holt, Rinehart & Winston, 1964, p. 174).
The authority of God is described as an authority manifested within God himself. Before man experiences it, and regardless of whether or not he likes it, it is recognized in God himself. The eternal Son obeys the Father (Phil 2:6-8); the eternal Spirit is at the disposition of the Father and the Son (Jn 15:26). This implies a first surprising feature of the biblical concept of authority: it is obviously considered as divine to obey as it is to command.
Later, he talks about how we can only recognize and respond to the authority of Scripture if the Holy Spirit enables us to.
